Tough economy, Jesus

These are the pieces I wrote for Raw Story on Sunday with David Edwards, who manages video content for the site. This first one got massive readership, and has now been posted to Digg and Facebook by over 4000 people.

Tom DeLay: People are unemployed because they want to be

“People are unemployed because they want to be? ” asked CNN’s Candy Crowley.

“Well, it is the truth. And people in the real world know it,” said DeLay.

The Senate passed a $10 billion stopgap unemployment measure Tuesday, after including an amendment offered by Sen. Bunning to prevent further deficits.

Consumer protections the ‘fundamental divide’ in health reform

“I think the president would love to have Republican votes,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said. “What he has is lots of Republican ideas: Selling insurance across state lines, making sure that we crack down very aggressively on fraud and abuse moving forward.”

“But,” she pointed out, “there’s a fundamental difference. The Republicans feel strongly that insurance companies should have less regulation than they do now, less consumer protection, less oversight. The president feels strongly that we need to change the rules of the road, that we can no longer have a private health system where insurance companies get to pick and choose, where they can lock people out and price people out. That’s really one of the fundamental divides.”

Sebelius added that even though there are GOP ideas in the bill, and Dems are “hopeful” there will be Republican votes, she’s not sure there will be.

Sen. Mitch McConnell on RNC ‘fear’ presentation: ‘It’s not helping’

Politico revealed a GOP PowerPoint presentation last week that recommended using fear and extreme negative feelings about Democrats to raise money.

“That sort of thing is certainly not helpful. I can’t imagine why anybody thought that would be helpful,” Sen. Mitch McConnell told ABC’s Matt Dowd Sunday.

“I don’t like it. I don’t know anybody that does,” he said.

When asked if someone should be fired for the presentation, the Minority Leader tried to distance himself. “Look, I don’t run the RNC. That’s up to them,” he said.

The fallout from the revelation that Republican operatives have such disdain for their own base has begun. Mark DeMoss, a prominent Evangelical wrote a letter to Michael Steele this week cautioning, “I’m afraid the presentation is representative of a culture and mindset within the Republican National Committee.”

Karen Hughes, the former George W. Bush campaign director, swiped at President Obama, and told NBC that her former boss rescued the economy. Looks like maybe the motivational speaking tour needs a kick-start.

Then again, GWB could be busy putting his Katrina-style leadership to work helping the people of Haiti. He warned NBC viewers “shysters show up and take advantage of people’s good will and generosity” without a hint of irony. (Democracy Now! reported last week Bush himself was responsible for “destroying Haitian democracy” when he backed the coup to overthrow President Aristide in 2004.)

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and half a dozen conservative commentators over on Fox News insisted the special election in Massachusetts will prove Americans oppose health reform even if the Democrat wins. In fact, only 190 out of the 500 people participating in last week’s Suffolk Poll said health care is the most important issue in Massachusetts. Apparently, voters didn’t get the memo.
