wednesday ANALYSIS:
There is no justice in SXSW booking. Opening night of the music festival and we’re forced to choose between Madlib, Hudson Mohawke, Eskmo and Ozomatli at 11pm. Since Ozo and HudMo are performing other times too, they’re out. So the choice comes down to Madlib and Eskmo.
Meanwhile, I’ll start my night with Portland’s Nice Nice, who have just put out their new record on the UK’s Warp label. Then I will head straight over to Speakeasy Kabaret for the Dam-Funk set, and then check out J Rocc. Since it will definitely reach capacity at some point, I may end up bouncing over to see Eskmo instead. The great midnight options include Califone and Flying Lotus, but what my mission is centered on is getting into The Parish for HudMo at 1.

thursday ANALYSIS:
Thursday night has the single best lineup of this year’s festival. And that means timing is everything, watch the opening of the Truckasaurus video and you’ll see what I mean. Of course, on most video games time can be frozen with the push of a button. SXSW has no such pause function.
So some of the hottest acts in the world will have to get skipped. There may not be a more important moment in the careers of Ozomatli than when they take the stage at Auditorium Shores in front of a massive outdoor crowd, considering their past legal troubles with the city of Austin. It was cruel of SXSW to book them up against Brownout, one of Austin’s best Latin funk groups, who have gained acclaim in part for their past efforts as Prince’s ass-shaking backing band.
I won’t see either of these shows, because I’ll be covering Idaho’s only artist in this year’s music festival, Rosalie Sorrells. BW will be publishing my look at a few of the other Idaho artists who could have joined her. [UPDATED] Finn Riggins were a late addition to the SXSW 2010 music roster. They are playing Saturday night.
The Bay Area’s Zion I and Austin-based Ocote Soul Sounds match social conscience with great music. And nothing will keep me from seeing what DJ Spooky has planned with Austin’s own Golden Hornet Project. Not even The Glitch Mob, Slum Village, Jaguar Love, Broken Social Scene or The xx. Damn, what a night.

friday ANALYSIS:
Did I say Thursday had the best lineup? Well, Friday doesn’t get much easier. I can’t believe Invincible, Bahamadia, Sharon Jones, Zooey Deschanel (She & Him), Kid Sister and Psalm One are all playing the same night but I’m going to go hear a bunch of dudes instead. My plans might change slightly depending on the set times for some of these hip hop shows… Would be fun to check out surprisingly not-at-all-violent bands Murder By Death or Trampled by Turtles.

saturday ANALYSIS: UPDATED!
Pretty Lights might rock some excellent frat parties back home in Colorado, but I feel like La Zona Rosa will be a good setting to decide if his talent can translate outside smoky, thin-air settings. Somebody needs to film this performance so it can be compared to his current clips… I’ll be on the east edge of downtown, seeing Idaho’s Finn Riggins. At 11, Yacht will set the stage nicely. Otherwise, this night is wide open… too many amazing artists to choose from!
